This invention relates to improvements in combination water heaters and steam generators.
An object of our invention is to provide an improved combination water heater and steam 5 generator, each having a series of spirally arranged water carrying pipes which form a spiral flue for the upward passage of the heated gases of combustion proceeding from a furnace or other source.
Another object of our invention is to provide an improved combination water heater and steam generator each having upper and lower water containing chambers which are connected by spirally arranged water carrying pipes that form a spiral flue for the upward passage of heated air or gases of combustion proceeding from a furnace or other suitable source, the said spirally arranged pipes of the water heater being so arranged with reference to those of the steam generator that the heated air or gas may be employed to heat the water in both sets of pipes.
A further object of our invention is to provide an improved combination water heater and steam generator having an efiicient construction which employs the same source of heat to produce steam in the steam generator and hot water in the water heater.
Other or further objects of our invention will present themselves or will be specifically pointed out hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings the numerals I and 2 designate, respectiveiy the inner and outer spaced walls of a water containing casing having a chamber 3 which is supplied with water from a suitable source by a pipe 4.
the casing serves as a heat chamber 5 which is supplied with heated air or gas by a pipe 6 connected to a furnace, a burner or other suitable means for supplying heated air or gas. The outer wall 2 of the casing is provided with a cock or drain means i which permits the water in the chamber 3 to be drained therefrom.
The upper end of the casing is provided with two adjacent openings 8 through which the heated air or gas from the chamber 5 may proceed into The interior of a an enclosed space located directly above the casing. Secured to the casing by any suitable means is a cylindrical shell 9 having an insulating jacket l0 covering its outer surface. Mounted at the upper end of the shell 9 is a hollow steam or water containing member ll having one or more discharge pipes 12 secured thereto through which steam or water may be conveyed or withdrawn. The water containing member H is provided with two adjacent openings l3 through which heated air or gas may proceed upwardly from the interior of the shell 9.
Suitably connected to the upper side of the outer wall 2 of the casing and to the lower wall of the watercontaining member II are a series of spirally disposed pipes l4 which carry heated water or steam from the chamber 3 of the casing to the interior of the said member l I. The pipes M are arranged in circular order and are connected to the member if and the upper side of the wall 2 near their peripheries. The pipes l4 preferably contact with one another and form a vertical cylindrical wall. Also connected to the upper side of the wall 2 of the casing and the lower wall of the member II is a large centrally disposed upright pipe it which also carries heated water or steam from the chamber 3 of the casing to the interior of the said member ll. Similarly connected to the wall 2 and to the member I l are a series of spirally disposed pipes l6 which engage with one another and are disposed laterally of one another at points where they extend upwardly in a spiral fashion. The pipes it are located between the pipes l4 and the large pipe [5 and form a spiral partition, which together with the plurality of pipes M and the large pipe l5 provide an enclosed spiral flue for the upward passage of the heated air or gas from the openings 8 in the casing to the openings [3 in the member II. The spiral movement of the rising heated air and its intimate engagement with the sets of spiral pipes and the large pipe l5, enables the rising water or fairly wet steam in the said pipes to be efiiciently and quickly heated before it emerges into the hollow water containing member H. By providing means of the usual kind to restrict the flow of the water into the pipes I4, 16 and I5, very dry steam can be suitably and efficiently generated by means of the apparatus just described.
The upper side of the water containing member II is provided with a circular seat within which a circular water container I! is adapted to fit, the said container having two adjacent openings l3 therethrough which register with the air or gas openings l3 located in the member II. The openings l3 and [3' permit the rising gases of combustion to proceed from the aforementioned spiral flue into the space located above the water container [1. Secured to the water container H by any suitable means is a cylindrical shell l8 having an insulating jacket l9 covering its outer surface. Mounted at the upper end of the shell 58 is a hollow water containing member 20 hav- 10 ing a discharge pipe 2| secured thereto through which water may be withdrawn. The member 20 is provided with a central opening 22 through which heated air or gas may proceed. Mounted on the top of the member 20 is a hood 23 into which the gases emerging from the opening 22 are adapted to enter. The hood is provided with an outlet flue 24 for conveying the heated air or gases of combustion away. The water containing member is provided with a plurality 20 of openings 25 located at the sides of the opening 22 through which heated air or gas may proceed from the interior of the shell is into the interior of the hood 237 So as to selectively control the passage of gases through either the 25 openings 25 or the central opening 22, we have pivotally attached adjacent ends of two damper members 26, as at 21, to the top of the water containing member 20. The damper members 26 are of suitable size and shape to cover the openings 25 when the former are separated sufiiciently, or to cover the opening 22 when they are brought together. The damper members 26 are also capable of simultaneously controlling the amount of gas proceeding through all of the openings by only partly covering them. The operating means for the dampers includes two bars 28, each pivotally connected at one of their ends to the central part of one of the damper members, with their opposite ends connected at a 40 common pivot 29 to an operating member 39. The inward movement of the member 30 pivotally moves the damper members 26 away from one another and the outward movement brings the said damper members toward one another.
5 Suitably connected to the upper side of the water container [1 are a series of spirally disposed pipes 3| which carry heated water from the interior of the said container to the interior of the said member 20. The pipes 3| are arranged 50 in circular order and are connected to the member 20 and the container 17 at points near their per pheries. The pipes 3% preferably contact one another and form a vertical cylindrical wall. Also suitably connected to the upper side of the water container I7 and the lower Wall of the member 20 are a series of spirally disposed pipes 32 which carry heated water from the container H to the said member 20. The pipes 32 are arranged in circular order and are connected to the mem- (30 ber 23 and to the container I! respectively, at
points adjacent the central opening 22 and at points inside the openings I3. The pipes 32 preferably contact one another and form a vertical cylindrical wall which is substantially concentric with and disposed inside the cylinder formed by the pipes 3| Similarly connected to the upper side of the container l7 and the lower side of the member 20 are a series of spirally disposed pipes 33 which engage with on another and are dis- 70 posed laterally of one another at points where they extend upwardly in spiral fashion. The pipes 33 are located between the sets of pipes 3| and 32 and form a spiral partition, which together with the pipes 3| and 32 provide an enclosed spiral flue for the upward passage of heated air or gases of combustion from the openings IS in the container I! to the openings 25 in the member 20.
Water is admitted to the inside of the container IT by a pipe 34 which is connected to the supply pipe 4 Suitable valves 35 and 36 are provided on the pipes 4 and 34 respectively, to control the 10 flow of water to the chamber 3 of the casing and to the container IT. The pipe I2 is also provides with a valve 31 to control the passage of steam or water therethrough.
The combination steam generator and water 15 heater utilizes the same heated air or gases for heating purposes and provides economical means for heating water and for generating steam. The valve 35 on the supply pipe 4 may be adjusted in the usual manner to permit a restricted 0 amount of water to enter the chamber 3 to insure the proper generating of steam by the lower section of the apparatus, or if so desired a full flow of Water may be allowed to enter the said chamber, thereby permitting the water to be heated rather than converted into steam. The member II is provided with the usual gauge 38 and indicator 39.

A combination water heater and steam generator comprising a lower enclosing shell; a water containing casing located at the lower end of the said shell; an enclosed water or steam containing member located at the top of the shell, having a water or steam outlet and one or more gas or air openings extending therethrough; a plurality of sets of water or steam. carrying pipes interposed between and connected to the casing and the water containing member, one set con- 40 sisting of a plurality of pipes forming an outer substantially vertical cylindrical wall, a large centrally disposed pipe forming an inner substantially vertical wall, and a third set consisting of a plurality of spiral pipes forming a spiral par-- i) tition located between the inner cylindrical well formed by the large pipe and the cylindrical wall formed by the outer pipes, the said pipes forming an enclosed spiral passageway for the passage of heated air or gases emerging from the casing; a water container mounted on the water containing member having a water inlet and one or more gas or air openings in communication with the gas or air openings of the said water containing member, the said gas or air openings provid ing means for conducting heated gas or air from the said spiral flue to the area located above the water container; an upper enclosing shell mounted on the water container; an upper water containing member mounted on the upper shell having a water outlet and one or more gas or air outlet openings extending therethrough; and 2 plurality of sets of spirally arranged water ca ing pipes interposed between and connecting t water container and the upper water containi [35 member, the said sets of pipes arranged to form a spiral flue for conducting the heated air or gases emerging from the openings in the Water container to the outlet openings in the upper Water containing member.
