766,094. Securing gudgeon-pins. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 22, 1955 [April 7, 1954], No. 8281/55. Class 122 (1). In a piston 14 axial movement of the gudgeonpin 24 is prevented by disc caps 36, 38 cold shrunk into each end of the gudgeon-pin bore, and having a peripheral flange 44, 46 adapted to expand into an annular groove 40, 42 provided in the bore adjacent each end of the gudgeonpin. The caps are made of material, such as aluminium or aluminium alloy, having a higher thermal expansion rate than that of the piston material, such as cast iron, and the diameters of the cap flanges 44, 46 and the gudgeon-pin bore are selected so that at normal non-operating and operating temperatures the flanges are respectively a loose fit and a tight fit in the grooves. The inner faces of the caps are flat with a raised boss 37, 39 adapted to abut the gudgeon-pin and the outer faces are curved to conform to, and have a slight clearance with, the wall of the cylinder 10. The edges of the outer faces are also chamfered as at 48, 50. Rotation of the caps is prevented by radial pins 52, 54 engaging axial keyways 56, 58 in the gudgeon-pin bore.
