Abstract

765,949. Two-stroke engines ; charge pumps. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 15, 1955 [Dec. 17, 1954], No. 7590/55. Class 7 (2). Displacement pistons, e.g. the undersides of working pistons 2, vary the volume of chambers 11 opening, as via further chambers 13 and passages 14, into inlet passages 6 connecting piston-controlled inlet ports 3 of individual cylinders to a manifold 5 supplied with air by an exhaust driven turbo-charger, part of the stroke of each displacement piston being rendered ineffected by a by-pass port 18 connected to the manifold 5 by a passage 19. An auxiliary inlet port 20 may communicate with the passage 19 and, where a mechanical exhaust valve in series with the exhaust port 8 allows the use of a shortened piston 2, may also constitute the by-pass port, the port 18 being dispensed with. To hinder back flow to the manifold 5, each passage 14 may end in a guide nozzle 15, a portion of each passage 6 up-stream of the passage 14 may be constricted and/or a check valve 16 or venturi or spiral device may be located in the passage 6 upstream of the passage 14. There may be a single exhaust driven turbine, one for each of a plurality of cylinder groups or one for each cylinder. Specifications 765,948 and 765,950 are referred to.
