[Also in Groups XVIII and XIX] The lowering movement of the arrestment mechanism 17 operated by a rod 18 and cam 19, of a balance beam 16 is damped by the engagement of the rod in a cylinder 19a having a viscous liner 25 of e.g. a silicone. The cylinder is otherwise free to move on the rod 18 under the restraint of springs 23 and within a limit defined by a fixed stop 20. In another embodiment similar damping means are provided for the return movement of the movable anvil of a micrometer gauge.
