Computing-apparatus.-In a weighing-scale for determining the number of identical small articles in a mass, or for obtaining a definite number, the usual weighing-platform 6 is coupled to a beam 16, Fig. 1, carrying a graduated cylinder 62 and a pivoted scale-pan 24. Above the beam 16, slidably mounted on guides 31, 32, is a supplementary beam arranged at right-angles to the beam 16 and carrying a pivoted pan 50, from which depends a rod 51 terminating in a roller 63 adapted to bear upon the beam 16. The pan 50 and its attachments are balanced so that only the weight of the contents of the pan 50 influences the beam 16. The leverage of the scale is such that one article placed in the pan 24 balances one-hundred identical articles on the platform 6. To determine the number of articles on the platform 6 when less than one hundred, a similar article is placed in the pan 50, which is then adjusted along the guides 31, 32 until the pressure of the roller 63 brings the beam 16 into equilibrium. The number of articles may then be read off on the graduated cylinder 62 by means of a pointer 58. For larger numbers of articles, different sets of graduations on the cylinder 62 may be brought into operation, the articles placed in the pan 50 being correspondingly increased.
