Abstract
Corrosion of iron or steel surfaces is prevented by coating the surfaces with a plastic pitch derived from coal tar, the coating process comprising contacting the surfaces with a melt of the pitch at 100 DEG -250 DEG C. until gas bubble formation ceases, draining off the pitch to leave a layer of 0.5 to 2mm. thickness adhering to the surface and allowing the layer to cool and solidify, the process being repeated when a thicker protective layer is required. The pitch is prepared from coal tar pitch which is softened by admixture with tar oil to the required plasticity or by "blowing" coal tar or coal tar pitch with air at 200 DEG -300 DEG C. The plastic pitch may be mixed with a minor proportion of coal dust. Specification 759,145 [Group II] is referred to.
