Abstract

765,521. Steam superheaters. SCHMIDTSCHE HEISSDAMPF-GES. Feb. 4, 1955. No. 3324/55. Class 123(3) A header, especially for a locomotive steam superheater, is formed by welding together steel plates and comprises channels 1, 2 for saturated and superheated steam respectively, channel 1 having a central inlet connection 3 whilst channel 2 has an outlet connection 4 at each end. Finger chambers 6 are arranged in intermeshing relationship between the channels 1, 2, each chamber consisting of an inverted U-section member, which may be of fabricated construction or in the form of a casting or drawn section, closed at one end by a plate 10 and at the underside by a thick plate 8 having holes 9 into which the ends of the superheated tubes 7 are forced by clamps 12 and drawbolts 11. The drawbolts have T-heads 14 which engage in depressions in corrugated straps 15 welded to the upper edges of the finger chambers to prevent the bolts from turning. Alternate finger chambers are welded at the open end into apertures in the opposing faces of the channels 1, 2. In a modification, the inlet and outlet channels are separated by a common partition and the finger chambers are made in two lengths, the shorter chambers being welded to one channel whilst the others pass through that channel and are welded into openings in the common partition.
