Abstract
An aggregate of water-soluble fibres impregnated with one or more chemicals or other substances, more especially for medical purposes, is prepared by applying to a mass of fibres the desired substance, dissolved or dispersed in a <PICT:0765457/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0765457/IV(a)/2> liquid in which the fibres are insoluble, and thereafter treating the fibres, if initially insoluble in water, to render them water-soluble without materially affecting the substance with which they are impregnated. Examples of fibres which are initially insoluble in water are calcium alginate and alginic acid, which may be rendered water-soluble by converting them into ammonium alginate. An impregnated mass of water-soluble fibres may be prepared by applying to a mass of water-soluble fibres such as ammonium alginate a solution or emulsion of an impregnant such as a mixture of castor oil and ricinoleic acid in a non-aqueous liquid such as alcohol, the solvent or carrier liquid being subsequently evaporated off. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a web or sliver 5 composed of teased-out impregnated alginic acid fibres is passed through a sealing bath of mercury 6 over the first set of guide rollers 7, then over the hollow rotatable unglazed pervious ceramic rollers 1 in the chamber 2 and finally over the second set of guide rollers 7 in the sealing bath 6. Gaseous ammonia is fed via the distribution pipe 10, the short branch pipes 4 and the hollow shafts 3 of the hollow rollers 1 into the interiors of these rollers. Each roller may comprise an inner former of metal gauze or perforated metal sheet supporting on its outer surface two ceramic semi-cylinders (or a greater number of segments) attached to the former by screws and/or end-plates one such end-plate being closed and provided externally with a short solid shaft and the other with a hollow shaft 3 rotatably supported on the ammonia inlet pipe 4. The mercury sealing bath may be replaced by two mercury seals of U-section and the impregnated fibres may be supported on an endless perforated carrier belt. Specifications 722,629, [Group VI], and 736,595 are referred to.
