Abstract

657,537. Coating wires. VALDENE, J. DE LA. May 9, 1947, No. 12599. Convention date, March 18. [Class 140] A coating liquid is applied to a filament, e.g. a wire, by first applying an excess of liquid to the filament and then removing the excess by tangential contact of the filament with a rotating cylindrical surface to which has been applied a limited amount of liquid by rapidly rotating the surface in contact with a thin layer of liquid confined between the rotating surface and a stationary concave surface. The excess of liquid is applied by a roller 35 grooved to receive several wires and the excess from each removed by a blotting roll 36 damped by contact with a film of liquid confined between the roller and a shield 62. A second blotting roll 37 and co-operating shield 63 may also be included. The applicator roll 35 rotates adjacent a shield 61, liquid being supplied to the space between the roll and the shield through a pipe 69. The three rolls and their co-operating shields are mounted within a liquid container 1, the shields extending across the full width thereof, liquid entering the spaces between rolls 36 and 37 and their co-operating shields through ports 66 and manifolds 67. Doctor knives or brushes 91, 92 and 93 cooperate with the rollers 35, 36 and 37, such that the liquid upon roller 35 is confined to its grooves, and upon rollers 36 and 37 to a thin film. Liquid from the container 1 is recirculated through a filter 75 and shield 61 which also carries a series of fingers 101 entering the grooves to facilitate the return of the coating liquid from the grooves to the space between the roll and shield 61. The rollers 36 and 37 rotate at a higher peripheral speed than the speed of the wires whereas the peripheral speed of the applicator roll is less but of the same order of magnitude. The rollers are geared together and may be constructed to facilitate removal.
