Abstract

In a process for manufacturing penicillin dressings a dressing is treated with a solution or suspension of a penicillin salt in a solution of hydrophilic film-forming colloid in an organic solvent or solvent mixture of low boiling point, a buffering or other substance being added, and, if required, is dried after freeing it from excess liquid. Penicillin salts of inorganic or organic bases may be used, e.g. potassium penicillin-G, calcium penicillin-G or penicillin salt of procaine. The selected penicillin salt is dissolved in a solution of a cellulose ether or a partially acylated polyvinyl alcohol in a solvent such as methylene chloride, chloroform or mixtures of chlorinated hydrocarbons with alcohols, e.g. methanol. Buffering substances, e.g. a citrate or phosphate or additional antibiotic, bactericidal or anaesthetic substances are added to the solution or suspension. The penicillin salt solution or suspension is applied to the dressing which may be gauze or cotton wool, by soaking, moistening or spraying, excess liquid being removed if necessary by suction or pressing between rollers. The impregnated material is dried at a low temperature in drying chambers provided with suction apparatus. The solution or suspension may be filtered through tulle before applying to the dressing.
