A valve comprises a fixed plate 2 provided with bores of circular cross section and convergent in the direction of fluid flow, and a rotary plate 5 provided with bores also of circular cross section but divergent in the direction of flow so that, when the valve is in the open position, the two sets of bores coincide and form venturi passages. As the rotary plate moves to the closed position, wedge-shaped surfaces (not shown) on the plate co-operate with adjustable eccentric studs 10 to press the plates 2, 5 together. Plate 5 is actuated from a rotatable screw 9 which advances a toothed rack 7 in engagement with teeth on the edge of the rotary plate.
