Abstract
764,553. Tubular heat exchangers; steam superheaters. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Jan. 27, 1955 [Jan. 27, 1954], No. 2450/55. Classes 64(3) and 123(3) A heat exchanger e.g. a feed water preheater, steam heated intermediate reheater or a cooler for blow-down boiler water comprises a plurality of units 1 connected in parallel for each of two heat exchanging fluids, each unit comprising tubes 7 housed within a jacket 6 one fluid flowing over and the other fluid flowing through the tubes and one of these fluids being at a relatively high pressure at least of the order of the critical pressure of steam, all the joints exposed to the high pressure fluid being welded. In the apparatus shown high pressure heating fluid flows through U-tubes 7 in countercurrent to a heat absorbing fluid at a relatively low pressure which flows through the jacket and over the tubes, all the units being connected in parallel for both fluids though tubular collector members 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP>. When used in steam power plant the same fluid at different stages in its working cycle flows through and over the tubes. The bend of each jacket comprises seamless drawn tubular sections 13, 14 welded together and to the limbs of the jacket which in turn are welded to tube plates 8 in which the tube ends are welded. The tubes open into spaces bounded by cover plates 9 communicating with collector members 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> through tubes 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>11</SP>. The collector members 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP> communicate with the interior of the iacket through holes 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP>. Leak detention means are provided so that a faulty unit may be located and changed if necessary.
