A box insert is formed from paper &c. strip by slitting the strip longitudinally at spaced intervals to define a middle and two side zones, the side zones being divided into separate flaps by transverse cuts or slots, folding the middle zone to produce compartments separated by the folds, and overlapping the flaps tile fashion and securing them together. The sides of the folds may be cut to give flaps 10, 11 which are displaced by the contents such as ampoules 12, and the side zones may be folded to close the compartment ends. Tongues 9a, b, c may be formed in the flaps 8 to coincide when these overlap and be pushed up to connect the respective flaps together. The inserts may be formed from a pre-cut continuous web by apparatus comprising fixed and moveable die elements 17, 18 respectively, a co-operating punch 20 and a feeding device 25. The web is fed forward intermittently the unfolded length of a fold 5 by dogs 26-28 on the device 25, the latter dropping after each feeding movement (vide arrow 36, Fig. 6). During feeding, the element 18 remains against the previously formed fold 5 and as the punch 20 rises under the web, following the path 33, it travels towards the element 17 exerting tension on the web. Members 29 press downwardly the trailing edges of flaps 8 to assist overlapping and finally the elements 17, 18 come together to press the fold 5 about the punch 20. The formed portion of the insert is drawn rearwards during folding. Where, as shown, tongues 9a, b, c, unite the flaps 8, plungers 21 force up the tongues into recesses 23 in abutments 22 on the element 17. The device 25 has meanwhile re-engaged the folds (vide arrow 34) and a new feeding movement commences. Movement of the element 18 is shown by arrows 35, 37, 38, Fig. 6.
