Abstract

A moving band 10, Fig. 1, of printed synthetic thermoplastic foil is provided with reinforcing inserts 13, 13a, e.g. of cardboard, and edge strips 14, 14a are separated from the band by cutters 15, 15a. The separated strips 14, 14a are folded about their centre longitudinal axes, slid over the edges of the band and welded thereto at 17, 18. The band 10 is then folded about its centre longitudinal axis, grip apertures 20 (20a) are punched out, and closure welds 21, 22 are effected, separated by a cut for separating finished carrier bags from the band. Grip apertures 20 (20a) may pass through the reinforcing strips 14, 14a, and inserts 13, 13a may be omitted. The strip 14a is folded and slid over the edge of the band by guide rollers (60, 62) a vertical triangle (61) and a folding channel (63, see Fig. 2). The bag may be provided with an overlapping cover (29, Fig. 6) provided with a wider insert (13b) weakened along a centre line (31). The reinforcing inserts may be enclosed in the folded foil edges (see Fig. 8). The inserts may both have weakened foldable centre lines (Fig. 9), four grip apertures being punched out. The grip apertures may be punched out in the reinforcing strips but below the inserts (Figs. 11-12), and the inserts may be bordered below by additional welds (35, 35a, Fig. 13) in the foil. A moving foil hose 10, Fig. 15, is cut open along a longitudinal edge 36, and upper and lower edge strips 14 (14a) are separated from the hose by a cutter 15. The separated strips are displaced laterally by a distance of half their width and inserted into the hose (Fig. 19), and welded to the hose walls (at 17, 17a). The projecting edges are folded through 180 degrees towards the hose (Fig. 20), reinforcing inserts 13 (13a) are fed into the space between the hose walls and the folded parts of the strips (Fig. 21) and the folded edges of the strips are welded to the hose (at 38, 39). Grip apertures 20 (20a) and closure welds 21, 22 are provided as before. The reinforcing strips 14 (14a) are laterally displaced by overlapping relatively movable plates (43, 44, Fig. 23) provided with diverting edges (45, 46). The inserts 13 (13a) are each cut off from a web 40 (41, Fig 21).
