Abstract

813,417. Making cartons. BOMBARD, L. E. LA. Feb. 25, 1957, No. 6207/57. Class 18. In forming a carton by creasing a blank and folding it on two creases to produce a flattened tube consisting of side walls and end closure panels, the separating of the end closure panels at the fold lines to form closure flaps is performed by cutting along these fold lines after the blank is folded. The method is particularly applicable to cartons of double face corrugated material. Blanks 73 are carried by a conveyer 70 beneath creasing rolls 76, 77 which may also form centre cuts 45, 46. Belts 80 fold the blank to tubular form, the blanks then being allowed to pile up on a conveyer 72 to give time for drying of the glue lap adhesive. A conveyer 71 passes the blanks between cutters 81 and 82 which separate the closure panels by cuts 50-53. The cuts 45, 46 may be omitted in the initial stage and the tube, after cutting at 50-53, may be refolded on the remaining longitudinal creases. The glue lap may extend the full length of the tube and cuts such as 50-53 then separate the remaining joined closure panels along the glue lap and along the fold opposed to it. The cuts are curved at their inner ends to improve the sift proof qualities of the carton.
