Abstract

Class 137 The first stage of a two stage air diffuser comprises a casing 12 of rectangular section which is covered internally with sound absorbing material 14 and contains a perforated cylinder 15 mounted on an end wall 18 concentrically with an air inlet tube 10 a closure disc 19, acting as a throttle and mounted on a rod 23 for sliding adjustment axially within the cylinder 15, carrying on one face covered with a sound absorbing layer 20, a perforated cylinder 21 which is telescopic within the tube 10. Adjustment of the disc 19 is effected by rotating a knob 29 on the outer end of the rod 23, which has threaded engagement with a nut 25 attached to the disc 19, the rod being guided by a sleeve 26 supported by the casing 12 and prevented from moving axially therein by cotter pins 27, 28. The second stage comprises a casing 30 which is attached to and forms a continuation of the, casing 12 and has formed therethrough a sinuous air passage 31 the walls of which are perforated at 32 and are covered externally with sound absorbing material 33. The outlet 34 of the passage 31, in an end wall 35 of the casing 30, is covered with sound absorbing material 36 over which is mounted a perforated plate 37. Attached to the end of the casing 30 is an elbow 38 which' is lined with sound absorbing material 39 and has an outlet 40 within which a sleeve 41 is mounted, the neck 42 of a frusto-conical diffuser casing 43, having a shoulder 45 which is adapted to engage the under surface of a ceiling 44. being fastened to the sleeve 41. The rod 23 is extended by means of a flexible shaft 48 which is guided through a spider 55 mounted on the sleeve 41 and is rotatably mounted on a deflector plate 46 (suspended from the casing 43). In a modification, Fig. 7 a, foraminous cylinder 10a is either fixed, or mounted for axial adjustment, within the end wall 12a of a casing 13a and is connected to an air inlet pipe, not shown, a throttle diaphragm 15a, provided with a sealing member 16a, being axially slidable therein. Adjustment of the diaphragm 15a is effected by a rod 18a which is attached at one end to the diaphragm and is slidably guided in a sleeve 19a secured to a strut 20a extending across the housing 13a. At the other end, the rod 18a is provided with a toothed rack 25a which meshes with a pinion 26a fixed to the upper end of a vertical shaft 27a extending downwardly through a guide sleeve 29a and through a diffuser 30a to terminate in a knob 31a. A perforated sinuous air passage 32a, covered externally by sound absorbing material 34a, has an outlet 35a, which communicates with a chamber 36a which is defined by a. perforated vetical, semicylindrical, deflecting wall 37a, an outlet 40a being formed in the base of the chamber 36a to which the diffuser 30a is secured.
