Abstract
764,931. Stuffing-boxes. FELLNER & ZIEGLER GES. Jan. 17, 1955, No. 1423/55. Class 122 (5). The end of a rotary drum for apparatus such as kilns, drying drums, furnaces, &c., is sealed by means comprising an air suction chamber surrounding the end of the drum and having its inflow passage arranged so that air drawn into the chamber inlet opposes the flow of leakage gas from the drum. The end of a rotary kiln drum 1 is surrounded by a chamber 3 attached to the kiln head 2 and connected via a pipe 4 to the suction side of a fan (not shown). The inner wall 11 of the chamber 3 extends into the chamber air inlet 6, has a clearance 7 with a wall 12 forming a cooling jacket for the drum, and is bent outwardly at its free end 11a to thereby, in conjunction with a flanged casing part 13, change the direction of any gas escaping through the clearance 7 so that it is opposed by the flow of air drawn into the chamber 3 through inlet 6. In a modification the air is drawn into the chamber 3 through the kiln cooling jacket. The air chamber may be provided with a number of circumferentiallyspaced separately controlled suction inlets.
