Abstract

An apparatus for the formol determination of nitrogen comprises automatic devices for measuring into a vessel the requisite quantities of the sample and of formaldehyde, or other reagent having similar chemical reactions to formaldehyde; a device responsive to the pH of the mixture; means controlled by said pH responsive device for supplying a suitable base until a prescribed pH is attained in the vessel; means for measuring the amount of base added and a timing device for controlling the various operations in the desired order. The vessel may be a titration vessel, the pH responsive device a pH meter which indicates the pH and the amount of base added may be automatically recorded. The measuring devices may comprise a container having an overflow device and a valve means arranged to discontinue the bulk supply during the time of supply to the titration vessel. In a particular embodiment the closing means comprises a plunger driven in a barrel by an electric motor, the barrel being connected by valves to the bulk supply and to the titration vessel and the motor being controlled to reverse and refill the barrel when the pH in the titration vessel reaches a prescribed value.
