Class 106(5) A machine for taking samples of liquid, particularly sewage, comprises a pump B which delivers the liquid to a tank C and thence through a pipe H to a measuring vessel J which tips to deliver its contents to a trough K and through a pipe L to sample bottles V. At the same time as the pump is energized by a timing switch, a solenoid-operated valve A on an outlet from the tank C is closed and the rising level in the tank C raises a float F and a flexible pipe E connected to it so that the liquid is delivered into the pipe H. When the vessel J tips, at a point adjustable by a screw M, a cord P raises a shutter N so that further flow in the pipe H is prevented, the excess liquid passing into an overflow pipe Q. When the time switch reaches an "off" position, the pump stops and the valve A opens to discharge the tank C, the fall of the float F lowering the shutter N and tilting the vessel back to initial position by means of a bar G. On completion of the pumping cycle, the time switch starts a motor R to rotate the funnel K until the pipe L is over the next sample bottle and the motor is stopped by a mercury switch O operated by pins on a collar S. When all the bottles are filled, the whole electrical circuit is isolated by a mercury switch T operated by a stop U.
