Classes 123(1) and 143 [Also in Group XVII] An apparatus for filling cans by weight with liquids that have a tendency to froth comprises a rack 32 operable by a hand wheel 33 to lower a feed pipe 5 to the bottom of a can placed on a weighing platform 29. When the pipe 5 is at the correct depth in the can a projection 24b operates a plunger switch 24a to permit a gravitation flow of liquid into the can until the exit aperture of the pipe 5 is covered whereafter a centrifugal pump 13, or other suitable means, is brought into action by a delay switch to speed the filling. When the can is full a mercury switch (not shown), associated with a balance beam 28, stops the pump. The rack 32 is then operated to raise the tube 5 up through a cup 2 until a member suspended from the bottom of the tube 5 engages with and acts as a stopper for the cup 2 (see Group XVII). A slide 281 on the balance beam allows the weight to which the mercury switch reacts to be adjusted. The act of placing a can under the pipe 1 rotates a crank 25 to actuate a safety switch. The crank 25 carries a drip funnel 26 drained by a waste-pipe 27. The delay switch may, instead of actuating the pump 13, bring into action a high pressure liquid supply provided separately from a lower pressure supply used in the first-phase of the filling cycle or to operate a throttle-valve arranged to give two separate rates of delivery from a high pressure supply.
