Abstract
1,001,057. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. A. S. LIMPERT, and R. J. LIMPERT. Jan. 24, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1961], No. 2686/62. Heading B8N. [Also in Divisions B1 and F1] In a system for delivering measured quantities of liquid, comprising a pump which draws liquid from a container and delivers the liquid to an open measuring vessel, which is filled to overflowing, and a second pump which removes the liquid from the measuring vessel, means are provided to remove liquid from the filled measuring vessel by controlled overflow in the amount necessary to lower the surface of the liquid to provide substantially the measured volume of the vessel or a predetermined volume prior to the operation of the second pump. In one embodiment, Fig. 8, not shown, the controlled overflow is provided by a woven wick secured around the upper edge of the measuring vessel. In a further embodiment, Fig. 10, measuring vessel 133 has flats on the exterior and is provided with a surrounding sleeve 134, slotted to grip the vessel resiliently. The small slots formed between the sleeve and the vessel act as capillaries to draw down the liquid surface in the vessel to provide a predetermined volume in the vessel. It is stated that axial adjustment of the sleeve 134 will provide variations in the level of the upper surface of the liquid retained by the vessel. In Fig. 1, pump 22, 23 delivers excess liquid to measuring vessel 28 and pump 29, 31 draws the measured quantity from the vessel and delivers the liquid to a stream of liquid flowing in pipe 11. The pumps of Fig. 1 may be replaced by diaphragm pumps 83, 84, Fig. 5, actuated by an hydraulic pulsing unit via line 81. In conjunction with pumps 83, 84 the controlled overflow may be provided by a piston 108, Fig. 7, which is lowered to contact the upper surface of measuring vessel 102 by bellows 103 actuated by the pulsing unit actuating the pumps. To ensure that all of the measured quantity in the measuring vessel is removed, the capacity of the pump removing liquid therefrom is greater than that of the measuring vessel. Parts of the system may be of transparent plastics material within which the presence of air bubbles indicates correct operation of the system. To provide adjustment in the quantity of liquid supplied per unit time, the speed of the pumps, which are operated synchronously, may be adjusted.
