762,560. Making heat-exchangers; welding by fusion. SPRINGFIELD BOILER CO. Nov. 17, 1954 [June 25, 1954], No. 33330/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a heat-exchanger, a relatively thick tube sheet 12 has passages 30 to receive thin-walled tubes 28, and the surface of the sheet is formed with grooves 36 to provide annular lips 38 surrounding the passages, the tubes after insertion in the passages being welded as at 42 to the lips. The passages are counterbored as at 32 to a diameter slightly larger than that of the tubes 28. As shown, each lip 38 has a radial width equal to a multiple of the thickness of the wall of the tubes, and is relieved at 40 for the reception of the weld metal; the depth of the grooves 36, which overlap, is also equal to a multiple of the thickness of the wall of the tubes. The tubes are expanded in the passages prior to welding and extend beyond the ends of the welds 42; also, the ends of the tubes are chamfered as at 43.
