Abstract

761,312. Magnetic switches. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. July 14, 1955 [Sept. 30, 1954], No. 28208/54. Class 38(5) Means for indicating the passage of a "go-devil" 2 in a pipe-line 1 comprises a hollow plunger 3 carrying a permanent magnet 7 and displaceable by the "godevil" to influence an armature of a mercury switch 16 whereby a wire supporting the armature is withdrawn from a mercury pool to break a circuit. The magnet 7 is received in bore 10 connected at the upper end by a passageway 12 to a bore 11, the lower ends of the bores being open to the pipe-line 1 through openings 18 in the plunger 3 whereby when the plunger is raised the liquid, e.g. mineral oil, above the magnet 7 is forced from the bore 10 into the bore 11 and back into the plunger thereby preventing build-up of pressure above the plungers.
