Abstract

617,094. Magnetic switches. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and LOVE, D. A. April 23, 1946, No. 12232. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XVIII] The level in the water bottle 1 of an airloaded hydraulic accumulator, for example, is indicated and/or regulated by a float 5 located within a non-magnetic tube 2 connected to the upper and lower ends of the bottle through isolating valves 3, 4 respectively, the float 5 having mounted thereon a permanent magnet 6 which is adapted to actuate external control switches 13 when the water in said tube reaches its highest and lowest permissible levels. The lower switch may be actuated to start a pump &c. which continues to operate until the upper switch is actuated to stop same; these switches and/or further separate switches, may also control indicating means such as electric lamps. Each switch 13 comprises an insulated base 12, clamped to the tube 2, upon which is mounted a pivoted bar magnet 7 and a mercury cup 11, the magnet being biassed so that its upper end inclines towards the tube 2 and also provided with a contact arm 10 arranged to dip into the said cup when the magnet 7 rotates about its pivot 8 under the influence of the float magnet 6.
