Abstract
170,117. Nichols, E. F. July 16, 1920. Signalling proximity of vessels.-A signal-circuit closer operated by the approach of a magnetic body, for example a ship, comprises two magnets arranged one above the other so as to rotate independently on a common vertical axis each carrying contacts so that relative rotation between the magnets connects the contacts and closes the circuit. As shown applied to a floating or submerged device oper. ated by the approach of a ship, the switch mechanism is contained within an inner casing 13 mounted on gimbals 11 within a shell. One magnet 25 of angular form is arranged at the base of a thimble 24, 26 supported on a pivot point 24<1> at the extremity of a post 22 carrying an adjustable nut which in conjunction with an internal flange, prevents the thimble falling off the pivot if the casing is reversed. An extension of the thimble above the pivot carries a cylindrical sleeve 44 and balanced contacts 31 spaced apart and in electrical connection with the thimble. Between the contacts 31 a central contact member 35 extends: it is mounted on a second thimble 33<1> supported by a pivot point 32 secured in the extension of the first thimble. In turn, an extension of the second thimble carries a pivot point supporting a third thimble 38 which is connected by a fine wire to the insulated terminal 47 on the casing the terminal being thereby connected to the contact member 35. The shell and the casing contain liquid such as oil, and floats 28, 29, 33, 39, take most of the weight of the thimbles off the pivot points. An internal flange 40 supported from the float prevents the third thimble falling off if the casing is reversed. In addition to the magnet 25 a second magnet 34 is provided carried by the second thimble 33<1>. The two magnets are permanently polarized and on the approach of a steel ship relative rotation of the two magnets ensues whereupon the contact member and one or other of the contacts come into engagement and close an indicating circuit.
