Abstract
760,968. Vehicle power steering. ADAMANT ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Jan. 28, 1955 [Feb. 15, 1954], No. 4379/54. Class 79(5). In a power assisted steering mechanism a shaft 22 is offset with respect to and gear-connected with a steering shaft 16 and a steering gear box input shaft 18, the steering shaft or, as shown, the offset shaft being mounted for free angular movement of one end thereof, the end being so guided that one gear 24 has freedom for transverse movement relative to the intermeshing gear 21, and the transverse movement actuating valve means (not shown) to energise a booster motor (not shown). As shown the steering gear 14 is connected by a valve housing 13 and a plate 15 to a fitting 11 which is connected to the steering column tube 10. Within the tube 10 is arranged the steering shaft 16 which is mounted by a bearing 17 in the plate 15 and carries a gear 20 meshing with a gear 23 on the shaft 22 which is universally mounted at 25 in the plate 15. The other end of the shaft 22 carries the gear 24 meshing with the gear 21 on the input shaft 18, and a roller 26 on the shaft 22 engages a guide surface 27 and a member 28 adapted to control the valve means and booster motor (not shown) on rotation of the shaft 22 from the steering hand wheel (not shown), reaction between the gears 21, 24 moving the shaft 22 and the member 28 about the mounting 25. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the offset shaft extends through the steering gear box and is gear connected to the input shaft thereof at the end remote of the steering hand wheel. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the shaft of the steering column is ball jointed towards its lower end and at its lower end is connected to a subtantially concentric steering gear input shaft by an offset gear cluster, the lower end of the steering shaft carrying the guided roller and valve actuating member and the upper end of the steering shaft being mounted for slight angular movement. Specifications 705,372 and 738,383 [both in Group XXIX] are referred to.
