[Class 80 (iii)] In steering-gear of the screw- and-nut or equivalent type the steering shaft 1 both rotates and slides axially and the screw 2, or the nut. is secured thereto, the nut 3. or the screw, being fixed, and the axially-movable member is connected to one part of a pin-and-groove or equivalent device 7; 8 which is external of the screw-and-nut gear the outer part being directly mounted on a rocker arm 9 secured to a rocker shaft 5. In the construction shown the fixed nut 3 is secured to the casing 4 housing the mechanism. The upper end of the steering shaft 1 is supported by a felt bearing or pad 12 in the casing 4.
