Abstract

772,682. Electric follow-up systems. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 23, 1954 [June 23, 1954], No. 37269/54. Class 40 (1). [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXIII] In a power-assisted manual steering system comprising a reversible electric motor 18 under the control of a manual steering member and a clutch 27, 28 for connecting the motor to the steering members and automatically operated upon starting and stopping of the motor, a lost motion connection 22 is provided between the motor and clutch to permit independent acceleration and deceleration of the motor. The invention is applicable to the steering of ships and aircraft, but as shown it is applied to a vehicle steering system comprising a steering gear 14, a steering shaft comprising portions 11. 12 interconnected by a lost motion coupling 13 and a steering wheel 10 on the portion 11. Mounted on the shaft portion 12 is a gear 17 meshing with a gear 32 carried by a shaft 30 to which are splined the clutch members 28 interleaved with the clutch members 27 splined to a housing 26. A plate carried by the housing 26 is separated from a plate 21 by balls 23 engaging ramped depressions in the plates, the plate 26 being connected to a wormwheel 20 by the lost motion connection 22 permitting up to 30 degrees relative rotation, and a worm 19 connected to the rotor of the electric motor 18 meshing with the wheel 20. One connection from the motor 18 leads to an earthed battery and the other two to contacts 40, 41 carried by the shaft portion 12, an earthed contact 42 being arranged between the contacts 40, 41 and carried by the shaft portion 11. In operation, depending on the direction of rotation of the portion 11, the lost motion in the coupling 13 is taken up and the contact 42 makes with either contact 40, 41 to energize the motor, thus causing rotation of the wheel 20, take up of the lost motion in the connection 22, and rotation of the plate 21 relative to the plate on the housing 26 thereby engaging the clutch 27, 28 to drive the portion 12 from the motor 18. Axial thrust of the clutch 27, 28 is transmitted through bearings 33, 34, 35 to a casing 16 rather than through the shaft 30 which is carried by sleeve bearings in the easing.
