Abstract

[Also in Division B7] A carriage 10 runs on a pair of inwardly facing channels which are disposed vertically in the ease of a lift and is propelled by driving wheels 35 from an electric motor 24 and associated gearing which transmit the power to the shafts 16. The axles 34 carrying the driving wheels 35 are mounted in housings 30 rotataby mounted on the shafts 16 and the shafts 16 and axles 34 are interconnected by gear wheels. When torque is applied to the shaft 16 the resistance to motion offered by the shaft 34 and driving wheel 35 causes rotation of the housing 30 around the axis of the shaft 16 to urge the driving wheel 35 into greater contact pressure with the flange 60, the reaction being taken by the support wheels 15 in contact with the opposing flange 58. The housings 30 are movable by jacks 39 to a position where the axles 34 are on the other side of the vertical planes through the shafts 16 when it is desired to drive the carriage 10 in the reverse direction. For this purpose the shafts 16 are carried in blocks movable downwardly in Fig. 2 under the action of further jacks and cam mechanism.
