Abstract
The electric rear axle has a simple differential effect in which the two parts of the electric motor (10) are floating, and with each part driving one half shaft. The rotor (13) drives a gear wheel (35) on one side of the housing and the motor housing (14) drives a second gear wheel (32) on the other side of the housing. One of the gear wheels meshes directly with a drive wheel (33) on one half shaft (12) while the other gear wheel drives its half shaft (11) via a chain drive (36) and drive wheel (37). The half shafts are joined by coaxial shafts (43, 44) with the space in between filled with a viscous fluid. This provides sufficient drag to operate the drive with equal torque on each wheel for normal travel. The whole drive unit is simple and light and requires no mechanical differential.
