Abstract

760,350. Electrolytic grinding. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. Jan. 14, 1954 [Jan. 14, 1953], No. 1101/54. Class 41. A method of electrolytic grinding comprises arranging an electrical conductor 60 in electrical contact with an electrically conductive grinding wheel 15, positioning a load-removing electrode 25 in electrical contact with the wheel 15, feeding a workpiece 13 to the wheel 15, supplying electrolyte to the locus of grinding and to the locus of contact of the electrode 25 and wheel 15, and feeding an electric current through the workpiece 13 to the wheel 15 and back through. the conductor 60, and simultaneously feeding an electric current through the conductor 60 to the wheel 15 and back by the electrode 25. Rectifiers 123, 130 ensure respectively that the workpiece 13 is maintained anodic with respect to the wheel 15, and that the wheel 15 is kept anodic with respect to the electrode 25, which therefore dresses the wheel 15. Variable inductances 122, 129 enable the currents to be adjusted, the supply being from the secondary 120 of a transformer 119. If desired, the rectifiers 123, 130 may be replaced by conventional full-wave rectification circuits, the inductances in this case being included in separate transformer primary circuits. In a further embodiment, a full-wave rectification circuit is included in the circuit containing the workpiece 13, and a single rectifier in the other circuit, the inductances being in the secondary circuits. Electrolyte is pumped from a tank to two nozzles directed near the required loci, and the electrode 25 is in an insulating holder connected by a ball-and-socket joint to a vertical spring arm secured to the base of the apparatus. The mechanical features of the apparatus are as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,375,619. Specification 491,023, [Group XVIII], also is referred to.
