Abstract

755,826. Electrolytic shaping. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 24, 1953 [May 23, 1952], No. 13176/52. Class 41. A method of removing metal from a workpiece comprises causing a jet of electrolyte to impinge on the workpiece, the direction of the jet either remaining fixed relative to the workpiece or moving in a predetermined path relative thereto, an electric current being at the same time passed through the workpiece and the electrolyte in such direction as to make the workpiece the anode. Holes may be made in sheet metal by allowing the jet to impinge on the metal while both are stationary, and sheet metal may be cut to a desired shape by relative movement between the sheet and jet so that the jet traverses a path on the sheet corresponding to the shape to be cut. In an embodiment akin to turning, a workpiece is rotated and a jet of electrolyte impinges radially on the surface. The workpiece 11 is carried by a spindle 13 journalled in a sleeve 14 mounted on rollers 15. A motor 22 rotates the spindle 13 by a belt 23 and traverses the sleeve 14 against a spring 17 by a cam 18 and follower 19. A jet nozzle 24, which is fed with electrolyte from a container 25, and the workpiece 11 are enclosed by a funnel 26. Current is passed between the workpiece 11 as anode and a cathode in the electrolyte supply as the workpiece is rotated and traversed. The electrolyte may be a solution of orthophosphoric acid for cutting copper, a solution of ammonium chloride, which may also contain hydrochloric acid or citric or tartaric acid, for cutting iron, copper or aluminium, or a solution of copper ammonium chloride and hydrochloric acid for cutting iron or copper.
