Abstract

726,372. Exciting dynamos. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 19, 1953 [June 26, 1952], No. 17023/53. Class 35. [Also in Group XXII] A self-regulating generator for supplying current to a self-regulating metal arc welding means has a rising volt-ampere characteristic similar to that of the arc. A split pole type D.C. generator 25, of open-circuit voltage adjustable between 10 and 35 volts, has two load brushes 33, 34 and an auxiliary brush 35 bearing a commutator 32 of which the brush 33 is connected to a welding electrode by a conductor 36, and the brush 34 is in series with parallel connected series field windings 47, 48 of commutating polepieces 30, 31, with series field windings 45, 46 of cross polepieces 28, 29, and with a conductor 37 and a work-piece 8. Main poles 26, 27 have shunt field windings 38, 39 in series between the brushes 33, 35 to provide a saturating flux for the main field windings. The cross-poles 28, 29 have shunt field windings 40, 41 connected in series with one another to the sliding contacts of a pair of adjustable rheostats 42, 43 connected to the brushes 33, 35. The series field windings 45, 46 have taps to provide different operating volt-ampere characteristics. Specification 714,901, [Group XXII], is referred to.
