767,688. Supply systems for welding arcs. BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. June 16, 1954 [March 25, 1953], No. 8289/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). In a system for welding with an aluminium electrode in argon, in which the electrode is fed at a constant rate, arc stability being obtained by a supply source having a falling voltage/ current characteristic; it is shown that optimum stability will be achieved when the open circuit voltage of the supply is nearly equal to the operating arc voltage, together with a low source impedance so that the slope of the supply characteristic is more negative in slope than the arc characteristic, but not greatly negative, the difference in slopes being less than 0.1 volts per ampere around the operating point. Method of obtaining both A.C. and D.C. supplies with this characteristic are discussed. Specification 705,164 is referred to.
