Abstract

759,025. Dielectric heating. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd. Sept. 8, 1954 [June 8, 1953], No. 15699/53. Class 39(3). Thermoplastic bags- or the like are sealed by a pistol grip device comprising a handle 5 and arms 6 and 7 supporting electrodes 8 and 9 respectively which, when a trigger 11 is actuated, clamps the bag or like between them. Electrode 9 is earthed and electrode 8 is fed by a coaxial cable 12 passing through the handle and arm 7, and which passes back through the arm 7 to the arm 6. The live electrode is connected to the cable at a position substantially one eighth of a wavelength from the position at which the outer cable conductor is connected to the earthed electrode, and the length of cable between the earthed electrode and the high frequency generator is substantially one half of a wavelength or a multiple thereof. Electrode 9 pivots on the arm 7 which is rigid with a housing 4, and the arm 6 pivots about a pin 10. The latter provides a bearing for the trigger 11 to which is coupled a link 15 secured to toggle links 16, 17. The link 17 is pivoted to the handle at 18 and the link 16 is pivoted at 21 to an extension of the arm 6. A spring 23 holds the trigger in a forward position and a spring 22 determines the electrode clamping pressure. An adjustable stop 25 limits the closing movement of the electrodes and a stop 24 limits the trigger movement. A microswitch 26 effects the energization of the system when the upper electrode has been moved to a predetermined position, and an indicator lamp 27 is then operated. An additional handle may be provided below the end of the arm 7. Alternatively both arms are rigid with the handle part and one electrode is mounted on a plunger which slides on or within one of the arms and is moved into clamping position by a trigger.
