[Class 39 (iii)] An arc welding-electrode holder comprises a switch 12 for the main current supply with a spring 16 opening the switch when the operator's grip on the handle 19 is released, and a second handle 7 operating a spring- loaded electrode grip 3, the handles being so arranged that the operator cannot simultaneously with the same hand release the electrode and hold the handle 19 to close the switch. The handles are formed by levers on opposite sides of the insulated holder or in planes at right angles to the axis of the holder. The electrode projects radially from notches 3 between jaws 1, 2, the jaw 1 being pivoted at 6 to jaw 2 and held by a spring 8 between the lever and the holder. The jaw 2 is secured at 2' into a metal shank 4 containing a helical spring 9 and a plunger 10. The lever 19 has a short limb 19' engaging the rear of the head of a plunger 13 normally pressed back by a helical spring 16 engaging a shoulder 18 in the holder 5 of insulating material and nuts 17 on the plunger 13, so that when lever 19 is depressed, the head 14 of bolt 13 moves forward to engage the rear face 12 of the plunger 10 to complete the supply circuit. In Fig. 3, the electrode is held between spring-pressed jaws 56, 59, the jaw 56 being screwed into a bolt 51 sliding in the tubular holder 24 of horn fibre. The bolt 51 has an enlarged rear head pressed back by a helical spring 54. The jaw 59 is mounted on a lever 60 pivoted to the bolt 51 by pins 62 sliding in slots 63 in the holder. A current supply lead 36 is screwed at 34 into a plug 31 held by a transverse fibre plug 32 at the rear of the holder and is connected by flexible conductors 33 to a nut 29 on the rear of a plunger 27 sliding in the holder and normally pushed back by a helical spring 30. When the pivoted handle 47 is depressed, a short limb 43 thereon engaging in a slot 44 in the bolt 27 urges the bolt forward to contact the rear of the bolt 51 and thereby complete the supply circuit.
