Abstract
680,650. Stripping conductors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and JACK, W. Sept. 19, 1950 [Jan. 19, 1950], No. 1476/50. Class 36. In a hand-operated stripper of the type having a pair of electrically-heated jaws which cut through insulation prior to its being drawn off a wire, each jaw is mounted on one end of a handle, the handles being pivoted together and normally held apart by a spring, and the jaws arranged to engage an insulated conductor which is approximately aligned with the handles. The stripper comprises a pair of heating elements 1 mounted on handles 2 pivoted at 3 and a pair of jaws 5. A leaf spring 4 tends to separate the jaws, which have cut-away portions so that when they are closed a space is left corresponding in size to the cross-section of wire to be stripped. The insulated wire is placed between the jaws which are then squeezed together against the action of spring 5, softening or melting the insulation at the point of contact, and holding back the severed portion as the wire is pulled away from the jaws. According to the Provisional Specification, the stripper may have overlapping jaws which are separated longitudinally of the wire, or may have four jaws, two for cutting the insulation and two for gripping the wire. Alternatively, the device may be adapted for pedal operation.
