Abstract

693,197. Soldering and brazing. CARLSSON, D. I., and KLINGBERG, O. H. May 23, 1951 [Nov. 18, 1950], No. 12021/51. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XI] A soldering iron has a narrow axial channel 4 in the bit 3 which is fastened on one end of a tubular container 1 for molten soldering metal heated by an electric resistor 2 around the container, the other end 8 of which is traversed by an air pipe 9 extending into the container and connected to a compressible air chamber 16, which on compression forces metal through the channel 4 and on subsequent self - expansion sucks back any excess metal. The air chamber 16 carries a piston 17 with an outer rod 19 and finger grip 20 for operation while holding the butt-like handle 12. A spring 18 within the chamber 16 returns the piston on release of the grip 20 and thereby excess solder is sucked back into the container 1, which may be filled by pressing the pointed bit 3 against a bar of soldering metal. An outer sleeve 7 around the resistance 2 has at its inner end a threaded plug 10 and at its outer end an inward flange 6 engaging a flange 5 on the bit thereby held firmly against the end of the tubular container 1. The resistance 2 is connected through leads 14 embedded in insulating material in a tube 11 on the handle to a flexible supply cable 15. A cover 8 may abut against an inward flange on the sleeve 7, or may be screwed into the sleeve 7. The copper bit 3 may be held by a hub screwed over the outer end of the sleeve 7. In Fig. 2 the air chamber is a rubber or like elastic bulb 26 held between a fixed part of an insulating handle 24 and a movable plate 30, which is displaced by a lever 29 pivoted at 28 and actuated by the lever arm 27. The handle 24 is formed under pressure with a flange 31 and receives a screw plug 23 which has passages for the supply wires 14 and an axial channel 25 connected through the air line 9 to the bulb 26.
