Abstract

<PICT:0758968/III/1> <PICT:0758968/III/2> A method of applying a coating of powdered material, e.g. luminescent material, to a selected portion of the inner surface of an envelope, e.g. of a lamp, having an open-ended neck, comprises inserting the envelope neck 3 end-down over a notched suction tube 9 into a suspension bath 12 of the coating material, Fig. 1, withdrawing the air in the envelope 2 through the valve 15 to draw the suspension into the envelope, venting the interior space of the envelope to the atmosphere through the valve 15 when the column of suspension attains the desired upper cut-off level 7 for the coating to cause the column of suspension to recede therefrom, and immediately immersing the neck 3 up to the desired lower cut-off level 17 for the coating in a thinner bath 18 of toroidal form having an overflow spout 21, Fig. 2, while simultaneously passing a low velocity air stream through the tube 22 and the envelope 2 above the thinner to dry the coating 8 previously deposited on the inner surface of the envelope. The coating material can comprise a luminescent powder suspended in a binder such as nitro-cellulose dissolved in butyl or amyl acetate with or without naphtha, and the thinner can comprise any of the solvents last mentioned.
