Abstract

800,406. Moulding gelatine &c. capsules by dipping. OWEN, H. W. W. Aug. 27, 1956 [May 26, 1955], No. 15217/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VI] In a process of manufacturing a two-piece capsule from gelatine or like soluble material, a blank is made by dipping a former 1 into a bath of the material and withdrawing it therefrom so that a coating adheres to the former, the coating is stripped from the former while still wet but sufficiently set to withstand the stripping force, the open end of the thus formed cup-like blank is sealed, and the blank is caused to assume a taper over at least a large part of its length such that the internal diameter of the blank near one end is greater than its external diameter near the other end, and the blank is dried and cut so as to provide one of the two parts of the capsule. As shown, an oiled upwardly tapering former 1 suspended from a slide 3 which runs on suspension rails 4 fixed in an air-conditioned tunnel (not shown in Fig. 1) is dipped in a bath of molten gelatine, for a period sufficient to leave the necessary thickness of coating thereon. After a setting period, it is stripped from the former 1 to produce an open-ended blank 5 having a relatively thick-walled base 6 and a relatively thin-walled open upper end having an external diameter at the point 7 less than its internal diameter at a point 9 towards the thick-walled base 6. After stripping, the blanks 5 are stood in drying jigs and the mouths of the blanks are sealed at 12, preferably by the method described in Specification 723,428 [Group VI], air (or other gas if desired) being thus trapped in each blank 5. On drying the thinner wall portion 7 contracts more quickly, so that a slight increase in internal pressure is exerted on the thicker and more moist end 6 so that a tapered blank is naturally formed in addition to the taper intentionally produced by the tapered former 1, the taper being sufficient to permit the larger diameter end 6 cut off from one blank 5 to fit over the smaller diameter end of another blank after the seals 12 have been cut off. The residual ends 5a of the two parted blanks are normally returned to the melt, whilst the assembled capsule is allowed to complete its drying before being filled or sold empty.
