Abstract
A method of coating the inner surface of a translucent tube for use in a self luminous light source wherein a phosphor coating is excited to luminescence by a gaseous radio nucleide, comprises dissolving or suspending a binder in a liquid medium, for example, orthophosphoric acid in acetone or ether introducing the liquid into the tube to form a body of liquid supported therein by surface tension to block said tube, propelling the body of liquid through the tube at a speed sufficient to coat the tube with the liquid by air under pressure, the air at the same time evaporating the liquid from the deposit, drying the deposited coating, adding excess of a phosphor, e.g. zinc sulphide, removing surplus phosphor and baking the tube.ALSO:A method of coating the inner surface of an open ended tube with an adherent material comprises introducing a body of liquid medium containing a coating material in solution or in suspension into the tube, whereby the surface tension of the liquid is chosen such that the body is not separated from the tube propelling the plug through the tube by a jet of pressurised air at a speed sufficient to coat the tube with liquid and evaporate the liquid. In a preferred embodiment, the inner surface of a glass tube is coated with orthophosphoric acid using a solution thereof in acetone or ether, the resultant coating being dried and a phosphor, e.g. zinc sulphide applied thereto, the coated tube being used as a self-luminous light source wherein the excitation is effected by a gaseous radionucleide.
