Abstract
693,391. Luminescent materials and processes. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 24, 1951 [March 1, 1950], No. 1850/51. Class 39(i), The process of coating a support, for example, the envelope of a fluorescent discharge lamp, with a phosphor comprises the steps of adding to a suspending vehicle, including a binder, the phosphor and a compound easily and entirely decomposable by heating to give a non-oxidising gaseous phase (e.g. ammonium oxalate), applying the resulting suspension to the support and heating to decompose the compound and to remove the binder. The oxalate forms non-oxidising atmosphere' of ammonia, carbon dioxide and water, which protects the phosphor from oxidation during the first phase of decomposition of the binder. The application to a white-fluorescing calcium halophosphate phosphor is described.
