[Also in Group XXVIII] Relates to heat exchangers or other apparatus for the treatment of fluids comprising an annular bank of spaced tubes or like elements in which a fluid is caused to flow through the spaces between adjacent elements. According to the invention the elements are parallel to one another and are arranged in a plurality of layers having pitch circles of different diameters, the layers of elements being coaxial with one another, each layer of elements having the same number (n) of elements as each other layer, the elements of each layer being angularly staggered with respect to the elements of the next adjacent layer or layers to be angularly midway therebetween and the pitch circle diameter (D 1 ) of a layer of elements being related to the pitch circle diameter (D 2 ) of the layer of elements next outside it by the formula : where c is the sum of the outside diameter of an element plus a desired cleaning gap between the elements.
