In an amplifier or oscillator using a tube such as a travelling-wave tube in which a beam of electrons is guided past an electrode which is at a positive potential (for example a helix), means are provided to develop a voltage dependent upon the current to the electrode and to apply the voltage to a control electrode whereby the current to the first mentioned electrode is maintained at a low value. As described a resistance is inserted in the part of the cathode lead common to the helix and Wehnelt cylinder circuits whereby an increase in helix current increases the bias on the Wehnelt cylinder and first improves the focusing and then as the voltage rises further reduces the beam current.
