Abstract

948,376. Electron beam apparatus. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1961 [Jan. 14, 1960], No. 91/61. Heading H1D. In a trochotron type beam-switching tube the longitudinal magnetic field is provided by permanent magnets within or forming part of the electrode assembly. In Fig. 2, rod magnets 38 are provided within the U-shaped spade electrodes 16 and as shown, are in contact with these electrodes. In Fig. 3, rod magnets 40 are positioned between the bases of the spade electrodes 16 and the cathode 14 and may be insulated from, or in contact with the spade electrodes. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), rod magnets may replace the target electrodes such as 26, Fig. 2, or the spade electrodes. In Fig. 6, each magnet 52 serving also as a spade electrode is flat-sided. Opposite sides of these magnets may be tapered however. In further modifications the targets 26, spades 16, or switching electrodes 32, as in Fig. 2, may be of permanent magnet material. Magnet rods may also be included. To correct for non- uniformity of the magnets coatings or sleeves of magnetic material, such as soft iron, may be provided on the magnet rods. The tube may be shielded by a sheet of magnetic material surrounding and fixed to the envelope or the tube envelope itself may consist of magnetic shielding material. Specification 948,375 is referred to.
