Abstract

758,185. Strap fastenings. MOTLEY, L. July 14, 1953 [July 22, 1952], No. 18492/52. Class 44. A device for fastening together a plurality of lugs 7 or the like attached to straps or other harness (e.g. an aircraft pilot's harness) comprises two plates 1, 2, a post 3 extending from one plate 1 through a hole in the other, cam means 5 on the remote side of the other plate 2 operable to press the plate 2 towards the plate 1, and means whereby, upon inserting the lugs between the plates at different positions therearound and operating the cam means 5 to hold the plates at a given relative position the lugs 7 will be positively locked against withdrawal. The plates 1, 2 are biased apart by a helical spring 4. A resiliently yieldable connection is provided between the post 3 and the plate 1 by means of a spring washer 11, the post 3 carrying a washer 14 whose movement is restricted by a circlip 15 and a shoulder 13 in the plate 1. The cam 5 and an operating lever 16 therefor are mounted on a pivot pin 6 on the post 3. The cam means is self-sustaining in each of three positions, viz. an unlocking position (Fig. 1, not shown) at which the plates are held apart by the spring; an intermediate position (Fig. 2, not shown) at which the plates 1, 2 are held by the cam means sufficiently close to retain the lugs 7, but can be forced further apart against the action of the spring washer 14 to permit the lugs to be inserted between them; and a locking position (Fig. 3) at which the lugs cannot be removed. A lost motion connection is provided between the cam 5 and lever 16, and comprises an extension 19 projecting into a hole 18 in the lever 16. A spring 20 ensures that when the lever 16 is moved in the " secure" direction the action is immediately positive. Inadvertent movement of the lever 16 in the " release " direction will be absorbed in the lost motion connection. In the example shown in Fig. 3 a circumferential flange 9 on the plate 1 engages a groove 10 in each lug 7. Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown) depict modified ways of locking the lugs between the plates.
