Abstract

Resins, used in making emulsion paints, are dispersed by grinding with water in normal paint machinery, such as pebble mills, ball mills, roller mills and bar mills, with a suitable dispersing agent and are then converted to emulsions by addition of appropriate plasticizers and protective colloids. Resins includes natural resins, run and unrun, rosin and its esters, adducts and modifications, cumarone indene resins and rosin ester modified phenolic resin. Suitable dispersing agents are soaps, sulphated and sulphonated oils, alkyl-aryl sulphonates and mixtures of these, sodium lauryl sulphate, triethanolamine and ammonium polyacrylate. Plasticizers include dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl sebacate, treated or untreated drying oils such as tung oil, linseed oil, marine animal oils, semi-drying oils such as soya oil and non-drying oils such as castor oil and petroleum oils. Protective colloids include glue, casein, cellulose ethers and polyacrylates. Pigments and extenders normally used in the paint industry may be added in the grinding step. In examples: (1) a rosin ester is ground with water and sodium lauryl sulphate and mixed with tricresyl phosphate and sodium polyacrylate; (2) cumarone indene resin is ground with water and triethanolamine and dioctylsebacate and carboxymethyl cellulose solution added; (3) a resin ester modified phenol resin, rutile (titanium dioxide), barytes and a solution of ammonium polyacrylate are ground with water. Dibutyl phthalate polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose are added and the paint adjusted to the desired consistency with water.ALSO:Resins, used in making emulsion paints, are dispersed by grinding with water in normal paint machinery, such as pebble mills, ball mills, roller mills and bar mills, with a suitable dispersing agent and are then converted to emulsions by addition of appropriate plasticizers and protective colloids. Resins includes natural resins, run and unrun, rosin and its esters adducts and modifications, cumarone indene resins and rosin ester modified phenolic resin. Suitable dispersing agents are soaps, sulphated and sulphonated oils, alkyl aryl sulphonates and mixtures of these, sodium lauryl sulphate, triethanolamine and ammonium polyacrylate. Protective colloids include glue, casein, cellulose ethers and poly acrylates. Pigments and extenders normally used in the paint industry may be added in the grinding step. Thus a rosin ester modified phenolic resin, rutile and barytes are ground with water and ammonium polyacrylate solution in a ball mill for twenty four hours. Dibutyl phthalate and polyvinyl alcohol with carboxymethyl cellulose solutions are added and the paint adjusted to the desired consistency with water.
