757,074. Pipe joints. ELLIOT, N. G. Jan. 20, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1953], No. 3056/53. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A ferrule for attaching a service pipe to a water or gas main under pressure comprises two screwthreaded tubular members which are adapted for connection respectively to the main and service pipes and which are engageable with one another to form a joint with a passage therethrough and a removable stop member for closing the passage when required one of the tubular members being of cup-like formation and the stop member being insertable transversely in the ferrule between the base of the cup-shaped tubular member and the end of the other tubular member whereby when the two members are screwed together the end of the other member is adapted to clamp the stop member in position or to engage with the base of the cup-shaped member when the stop member is removed from the ferrule. As shown a ferrule 1 comprises a threaded portion 4 and is attached to a main 3 by screwing therein. A second fitting 8 is screwed into the ferrule 1 and co-operates with a detachable closure member 17. Thus on tightening up the fitting 8 the closure member may be fixed in position. With an asbestos cement main a saddle 2 is placed over a packing ring on the wall of the main and a hole drilled and tapped in the main and the ferrule passed through a hole in the saddle and screwed down into the main. Where an iron main is used the saddle may be omitted and the ferrule connected to the main by a fine tapered thread.
