Abstract

Lubricating compositions contain a major proportion of a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil or of a hydraulic fluid comprising a major proportion of a blend of a water soluble alcohol and water, an a minor proportion of a monoester or di-ester of sulpho succinic acid or a salt of such a sulpho-succinate. Salts of mono or polyvalent metals, e.g. sodium and barium, and of amines such as guanidine, are referred to. The alcohols used to form the esters may be branched chain alcohols derived from the oxo process or fatty alcohols derived from animal and vegetable oils, e.g. coconut oils. Metal dialkyl sulpho succinates, particularly sodium dioctyl sulpho succinate are referred to. Synthetic lubricating oils specified are ester and polymeric oils. The lubricating oils may be thickened with soaps to form greases. The hydraulic fluid may comprise ethylene glycol and water Antioxidants, anticorrosion agents and antifoaming agents may be added to the compositions. In an example, the lubricating properties of a hydraulic fluid consisting of "Lissapol" (Registered Trade Mark), water, ethylene glycol, turkey red oil, sodium nitrite, sodium mercaptobenzthiazole, a silicone antifoaming agent and sodium dioctyl sulpho succinate were tested. Specification 738,749 is disclaimed.
