Abstract

756,405. Purifying waste gases from pyrometallurgical processes. OESTERREICHISCH-ALPINE MONTANGES. July 9, 1954 [July 18, 1953 ; Nov. 27, 1953], No. 20126/54. Class 55(2). In a process for purifying waste gases produced, in pyrometallurgical processes and containing very fine oxide particles of an average size of 1 micron diameter, the gases are led through a body of water to which has been added a water-soluble wetting agent to reduce the surface tension below 50 dyn/cm. In the drawing waste gases from a converter 1 are drawn by a blower 9 through conduits 5 and 8, a cooling coil 19 being arranged in conduit 5, to pass through a series of perforated pipes 121 immersed in a body of water to which a watersoluble wetting agent has been added and contained in a vessel 13. The upper part of the vessel 13 communicates with a vessel 17 and an outlet 18, vessel 17 being adapted to receive any foam developing during the process. Diesel fuel oil may be added to the surface of the water to prevent foaming if desired. The pressure of the gases to be purified at their point of admission into the bath of water is chosen so that it is not substantially higher than the hydrostatic pressure at this point. Sieves, nets or guiding plates may be positioned in the vessel 13 to improve contact between gas and liquid. In a modification the gases to be purified and the water are conducted through a pipe or channel in counter-current to each other.
